At Optimum TMS and Wellness Suites, we pride ourselves on providing mental health treatment backed by recent empirical evidence and successful clinical outcomes. TMS and Spravato treatment are our specialties. We understand that choosing a novel treatment – like TMS and Spravato – can be a challenging task.
We aim to aid your decision-making process through this informative article on the differences between TMS and Spravato. These differences may be determining factors in what treatment you pursue.
*Spravato (ie. Esketamine) | *Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) | |
---|---|---|
Mechanism of Action | The chemical, esketamine, is administered via a nasal spray to be absorbed through the nasal mucosa. It alters the glutamate neurotransmitter system and is believed to lead to increased neural plasticity to rebuild functioning brain connections. | Electromagnetic pulses are sent to specific areas in the brain to disrupt activity and restore healthy neural activity. It is non-invasive. |
Post-Treatment Procedure | Esketamine’s effects can alter awareness and lead to disorientation or dissociation. Patients are monitored for 2 hours after sessions for adverse reactions before being approved to leave. They are unable to drive until the next day, after a restful night’s sleep. | TMS results in no change in awareness or consciousness. After a 20-minute session of stimulation, patients are free to drive home and return to their daily activities. |
Time Until Onset of Therapeutic Effects | Spravato can have immediate effects. Alleviation of symptoms, particularly suicidal ideation, can occur within hours of a session. Extensive symptom relief typically occurs 4 weeks after completion of treatment. | Although for some, symptom relief can begin 2 to 3 weeks after beginning treatment, it is common for patients to experience therapeutic effects 4 to 5 weeks into treatment. |
Length Treatment | Spravato is a long-term therapy. Its frequency can be up to twice weekly, however, this tapers off over time until a steady maintenance structure is established. This may consist of weekly or biweekly sessions. | A full TMS treatment depends on personal needs. Typically, 29 sessions are involved for OCD treatment and 36 sessions for depression spread across 6 to 8 weeks. Maintenance sessions are possible based on individual needs. |
Side Effects | Side effects can include: dizziness, dissociation, fatigue, sedation, nausea, increase in blood pressure, or change in sense of taste. | Generally, TMS poses a low risk for side effects. If side effects occur, they are usually mild or short-lived. These may include headaches, scalp discomfort, jaw discomfort, or fatigue. In very rare cases, there is a low risk of seizure. |
TMS and Spravato are both promising treatment options that have demonstrated positive outcomes in empirical and clinical studies. If you are experiencing depressive symptoms that are exceptionally difficult to treat, this might be the answer. You may like to undergo TMS or Spravato on its own or together. Combined therapy can offer added benefits and bolster therapeutic effects. We are committed to customizing a treatment plan that is best suited to your individual needs, so we encourage you to speak with us to explore your options!
